Chemetall launches pH-neutral pickling technology

To gently remove surface blemishes from welded steel parts and galvanized materials, Chemetall has developed a high-performing portfolio of pH-neutral pickling agents.

Baton Rouge, La./USA, New Providence, NJ/USA; Frankfurt/ Germany; December 9 2015 - Chemetall, a Global Business Unit of Albemarle Corporation (NYSE: ALB), introduces pH-neutral pickling technologies. The liquid products Gardacid® N 4480 and Gardacid® N 4481 remove laser scale and oxide layers as well as welding residues from steel and galvanized steel automotive components. The result is a clean metallic surface with improved surface quality. Both technologies are successfully performing at several automotive components manufacturers.

Easy handling of neutral pickling agents

Neutral pickling agents provide significant handling advantages compared to conventional, mineral acid-based pickling agents. The handling of pH-neutral products improves ease of use for operators in contrast to the use of strong acids and highly alkaline based. Beyond ease of use, the components can be immediately dried after processing without any additional intermediate cleaning step. Gardacid® N 4480 is specially formulated for steel surfaces, whereas Gardacid® N 4481 is applied mainly on galvanized materials.

Manual application possible

Gardacid® N 4480 and Gardacid® N 4481, pH-neutral pickling agents, can be applied either as a single step process or in combination with an alkaline cleaning step prior to a conversion coating, with the eco-friendly, Oxsilan® thin-film technology or a conventional zinc-phosphate process. A special feature offered by Chemetall’s neutral pickling agents is the possibility to apply either technologies manually on weld seams. After manual application, the components can be treated as usual with subsequent pretreatment processes.
